It has nothing to with freedom of the press. Whether the US federal government fund radio braodcasting to other countries or not is not about freedom of the press in the US - freedom of the press does not mean that the government has to pay for the press.

But it has a lot to do with what role US wants to play in the world.

If the US want to lead the fight for freedom and democracy in the world, then VOA (Voice Of America), RFE (Radio Free Europe) and RFA (Radio Free Asia) are important to get the message out to the people in countries with no freedom of the press.

If the US only care about itself, then shutting them down make perfect sense - their target audience is not people within the US.

Russia and China are happy with the decision - Kyievpost and NBC News.
