The two entities wordproess.org/Automattic and WPEngine has been fighting intensely for several months now.
One of the things WPEngine has done is develop a WP plugin ACF (Advanced Custom Fields). ACF is available in two versions - a free version and a commercial version with extra features. The license is GPL.
First wordpress.org made a copy of the free version available under the name Secure Custom Fields.
Now wordpress.org has made a fork of the commercial version available also for free and also under the name Secure Custom Fields.
The concensus on the net seems to be that it is legal due to GPL license but definitely not nice.
