Original link: Oracle urged again to give up JavaScript trademark / TheRegister.
Everybody knows that the only thing JavaScript and Java really share is the first 4 letters of the name.
Some know the background. NetScape invented the new language LiveScript. Sun had just relaesed Java and it was hot in the IT world. So NetScape asked if they could rename LiveScript to JavaScript and Sun said yes. But Sun kept the rights to the name. And Oracle bought those rights together with Sun.
Which is why the language everybody knows as JavaScript sometimes is referred to as ECMAScript, ES, JS, JScript etc.. JavaScript is a trademark owned by Oracle.
But now the community with Brendan Eich included has asked Oracle to release the trademark.
