Oracle is laying off people like most tech companies. They need cash for investment in AI cloud infrastructure and cut hard.
Apperently the cuts in Oracle hit the MySQL team hard.
Not good for MySQL. Probably not good for MariaDB either. But I am not surprised - the number of companies willing to pay Oracle for MySQL support must have decreased dramatically. Companies are using MySQL (or MySQL API compatible) services in AWS, Azure and GCP, so Amazon/Microsoft/Google are getting the support money.
